Timeless

Split Rock Lighthouse, icon of Lake Superior. Built in 1910. Decommissioned in 1969. Classical Revival design elements.

The lighthouse is lit in the evening every November 10th since 1976 in memory of the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The large freighter sank in Lake Superior’s frigid waters in 1975.  

On the night of May 3, 2023, it was lit to honor the passing of singer-songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot, who wrote the epic, “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. 

It seems like almost every photograph of a lighthouse is a wide angle shot with the lighthouse far in the distance. In October 2021, I hiked up close to the base of this one to capture its elegant beauty and its wonderful state of preservation.
