Reciprocal Pool

A year to the day after taking this photo, I went back to this spot in the Mississippi Headwaters Forest, expecting to be greeted once again by this welcoming scene. But, to my disappointment, I was surprised to find that it didn’t look anything like this on my second sojourn. Last year’s clear blue pond was, in year two, a muddy mess ringed by clumps of tall weeds.

I learned that day what happens during a year when there is a drought, even in a very northern region of the country that is known for having heavy snowfall in the winter. I am delighted to have captured this beautiful image of this pond when it was in an optimally healthy state.
